Victory at Dusk
From the field
The Edificio Metrópolis holds the corner of Gran Vía and Calle de Alcalá in Madrid, its slate dome and gold trim rising to the bronze Winged Victory that crowns the tower. The sky behind it had gone soft pink and blue in the minutes after sunset, and a one-second exposure pulled the evening traffic into ribbons of light across the intersection. I was in Madrid for work, not for photography, but I finished early and went out to walk before the light was gone. I came around the corner onto this view, the building lit and the sky still holding color, and set up on the pavement to catch it. A single second was enough to smooth the cars into streaks while the stone stayed sharp. The best frames on that trip came from the walk, not the schedule.
