Pink and lavender streaked the sky over an Amsterdam canal as the color drained slowly out of the evening. Rhododendrons spilled from the bank in the foreground, still holding their spring bloom, and cyclists lingered on the stone bridge behind them, its arches lit with small lights that doubled in gold on the still water below. We had found a bar along the canal that evening and settled in with a beer to watch the sky change, no particular hurry to move. When a boat finally came through beneath the bridge, I opened the shutter and let it run, and the boat became a long ribbon of light threading through the arches while the rest of the frame held still around it.
