The last of the sunset burns orange behind Edinburgh Castle while the Old Town comes on below in points of amber. The Dugald Stewart Monument holds the near dark on Calton Hill, its columns catching just enough light to keep their edges, and past it the Balmoral clock tower and the spire of the Scott Monument stand out of the rooftops. This was our first night in the city. The sky was clear, which in Edinburgh means the wind has nothing to slow it, and it came over the hill cold enough that I kept my hands in my pockets between frames. We stayed anyway. A clear night here is worth standing in the cold for, and the payment comes in the ten or fifteen minutes when the sky still holds color and the streetlights have already found their strength. I shot until the orange thinned to blue, then walked back down into the warm.
