Into the Wind
From the field
A dominant male lion holds his gaze at me in the open eastern Serengeti, mane lifting in the wind while the morning sun came in low from the side. We had gone out from Namiri Plains camp looking for the resident pride and found them not far out, two males running ahead of the group through the short grass. This one was the larger of the pair, known to our guide but not given a name, the kind of animal that fills a frame before you even raise the camera. I kept low and held still when he turned and looked directly at me. The breeze lifted his mane exactly when the light caught it, and I had him for a few seconds before he looked away. Lions hold this ground well in the Serengeti, which carries the largest remaining lion population in Africa, but the species has been listed Vulnerable globally for decades, its range contracting on every boundary that isn't protected.

A photographic print mounted beneath glossy acrylic glass, bonded to an aluminum backing and sealed at the edges. The image is exposed on Fuji Crystal photographic paper and developed in the traditional way, then the acrylic draws the color forward and deepens the sense of space, so the picture reads as if lit from within.
Where my baryta print reads as ink on cotton, the acrylic reads as an object. Glossy, dimensional, with color and contrast pushed to their fullest. It is the surface I choose when an image lives on saturation and depth, a savanna at last light, water and reflection. The aluminum backing keeps the panel flat and ready to hang the moment it arrives.
Specifications Construction: photographic print under glossy acrylic glass, aluminum Dibond backing, silicone-sealed edges Print: chromogenic photo print on Fuji Crystal DP II paper, or Ilford paper for black and white Acrylic thickness: 2 mm, 4 mm, or 6 mm, with greater depth at higher thickness Color guarantee: 75 years Mounting: ready to hang, hardware included Sizes: from 3.5 x 3.5 in, maximum size varies by acrylic thickness
