From the field
A white rhino grazes in the short grass at Solio, close enough that the horn crowds the bottom of the frame and every crack in the hide reads like weathered stone. Corey and I had come to Laikipia for our first safari, our first time in Africa, and I had said before we left that I wanted to spend it photographing rhinos. What I had not planned for was how much of that time would be spent sitting still. We stayed in the vehicle among them for long stretches, listening: grass tearing, slow breath, the shift of weight from one foot to another. Solio was Kenya's first rhino sanctuary, and animals bred here have gone on to restock parks and conservancies across the country. This one gave us almost no attention at all. I worked in black and white because the texture of the hide was the whole picture.
